A boiler that leaks, short cycles, or goes cold in the first hard freeze needs a technician who finds the cause instead of resetting the symptom. We repair, tune up, and replace oil-fired boilers for homes across Central Pennsylvania, working from our base in Mount Pleasant Mills.

Boiler Repair That Finds the Cause, Not Just the Symptom

You get a boiler that runs safely and heats evenly again, with the cause of the failure explained so you know what was fixed. Our boiler repair covers:

  • Burner and fuel system repair. We clear clogged nozzles, replace filters, and trace blocked or rusted fuel lines, the problems that starve a burner of oil and leave rooms cold.
  • Ignition and control diagnosis. We test electrodes, ignitors, and controls so the boiler lights reliably and responds to your thermostat.
  • Leak and pressure checks. We inspect the heat exchanger, relief valve, and expansion tank, the parts that protect your system from pressure buildup and water damage.
  • Combustion testing. We use a combustion analyzer to set the boiler for efficient burning and safe carbon monoxide levels.
  • Venting and exhaust inspection. We clean exhaust vents so combustion gases leave the house instead of building up inside it.

If we find the boiler is past repairing, we tell you so and walk through your options before any work starts.

Signs Your Boiler Needs a Technician

Call us when you notice any of these:

  • No heat or no hot water, or rooms that heat unevenly
  • Water around the boiler, or corrosion on nearby pipes and fittings
  • Banging, hissing, or gurgling sounds
  • Soot, smoke, or an oil smell near the burner
  • A boiler that turns on and off repeatedly
  • Fuel use climbing without a change in your routine

Turn the boiler off if you see smoke or smell oil, then call us. If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, get everyone outside and call 911.

What to Expect When You Call

  1. You call or send a request. Tell us the symptoms, the age of the boiler, and the fuel it uses, and we schedule the visit.
  2. We diagnose on site. A technician checks the fuel supply, burner, controls, and safety components to find the root cause.
  3. We explain the findings. You hear what failed, what the fix involves, and whether repair or replacement makes more sense, before work begins.
  4. We repair and test. After the repair we run the boiler through a heating cycle, check combustion and safety controls, and confirm it answers a call for heat from your thermostat.
  5. We recommend next steps. That may be a seasonal tune-up or a maintenance agreement so small issues get caught early.

Our technicians take pride in timeliness, politeness, and cleanliness: they arrive when scheduled, treat your home with care, and clean up when the job is done.

Should You Repair or Replace Your Boiler?

Repair makes sense when one failed part is the only problem on a boiler that is otherwise sound. Replacement deserves a closer look when repairs keep recurring, the heat exchanger leaks, the oil tank or chimney is deteriorating, or the boiler burns a lot of fuel for the heat it delivers.

Efficiency is measured as AFUE: at 90% AFUE, 90% of the energy in the fuel becomes heat for your home. The U.S. Department of Energy lists older, low-efficiency heating systems at 56% to 70% AFUE, and modern systems reach as high as 98.5%. The same guidance notes that a chimney may need a new liner when an older boiler is replaced with a newer one, so we bring venting into the conversation before you commit.

Sometimes the better answer is a different kind of system. At Free Spring Church of the Brethren in Mifflintown, two oil-fired boilers were running at roughly 80% efficiency next to AC equipment at least 20 years old, and we replaced the setup with Mitsubishi Hyper-Heating ducted heat pumps. In a two-apartment house in Lewistown, each unit had an aging oil boiler and an old oil tank (one was leaking), no central air, and no natural gas line, so we installed matching mini-split systems that heat and cool without ductwork.

Boiler Tune-Ups That Catch Problems Before the Cold Arrives

A yearly tune-up lets small problems show up in October instead of January. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends a yearly professional inspection of fuel-burning heating systems, including boilers. Our tune-up includes:

  • Heat exchanger cleaning to keep heat transferring efficiently
  • Exhaust vent cleaning so combustion gases vent properly
  • Filter and nozzle replacement for clean fuel flow and steady combustion
  • Oil pressure check so the burner gets the fuel it needs
  • Electrode and ignitor inspection for reliable ignition
  • Combustion analysis to confirm efficient burning and safe carbon monoxide levels
  • Relief valve and expansion tank inspection, the safety parts that manage system pressure

Ask about our maintenance agreements for seasonal tune-ups on your boiler and your air conditioning.

What Boiler Repair and Replacement Cost

Repair cost depends on which part failed, how easy it is to reach, and what the diagnosis uncovers, such as fuel line corrosion or worn controls. Replacement cost depends on the type and efficiency of the new boiler, the size your home needs, and the condition of the existing piping, oil tank, and chimney. A higher-efficiency boiler costs more up front and uses less fuel, so your heating history and how long you plan to stay in the home help decide whether that trade pays off.

We diagnose before we quote a repair so the price reflects the actual problem, and we provide a detailed estimate for any replacement. Request a free replacement estimate and we will walk through the options that fit your home and budget.

A big shout out to Ben and Dave for installing our oil boiler! They were efficient and friendly and got the job done in good time! This last year with the new boiler has saved us between $800-900 in oil costs. Highly recommend!

I needed a new oil boiler for my house in Elizabethville because my last one died. I called MGM and Mike responded instantly, came over a few hrs later, and gave me the exact quote the SAME DAY. The boiler was installed less than a week after my quote (most of which was waiting for the boiler to come in). The 3 crew members were professional and explained everything very well. They also provided t-shirts for my wife and I. Amazing company!! 5/5

Repair and maintenance come first: we had maintained Free Spring Church of the Brethren’s two oil-fired boilers for years before that conversion. At Aldersgate United Methodist in Mifflintown, the sanctuary was heated by an oil boiler and had no air conditioning, so we installed ducted Mitsubishi heat pumps that added cooling and upgraded the heating without disturbing the stained glass or the look of the sanctuary. We ran the ductwork through the attic and hid the return air behind decorative grilles on the vestibule doors.

Boiler Repair Questions Homeowners Ask

The price depends on the boiler, its fuel system, and whether you need a tune-up or a repair. We price tune-ups and maintenance agreements by system, so call us for a quote. For a repair, we diagnose the problem first and explain the cost before work starts.

Lifespan varies with the boiler’s design, how it was installed, and how consistently it has been serviced. We look at repair history, leaks, efficiency, and the condition of the chimney and oil tank, then tell you whether another repair or a replacement makes more sense.

Consider replacement when repairs keep recurring, the heat exchanger leaks, or the boiler burns a lot of fuel for the heat it delivers. Older, low-efficiency systems run at 56% to 70% AFUE, while high-efficiency models reach 90% to 98.5%. We weigh your boiler’s condition against the cost of a new system so you can decide with real numbers.

You can check the basics: oil in the tank, the power switch, the breaker, and the thermostat setting. Cleaning, nozzle and filter replacement, and combustion testing need a trained technician with an analyzer, because incorrect settings can raise carbon monoxide levels or cause sooting. Call us if the boiler still will not run.

Common causes are an empty tank, a blocked fuel line, a clogged nozzle, a tripped breaker, a thermostat set too low, or a failed control. Check the oil level, power switch, breaker, and thermostat first. If those are fine, do not press the reset button repeatedly. Call us and we will find the cause.

Heating and Cooling Help Beyond the Boiler

If your system is a furnace instead of a boiler, we handle gas and propane furnace repair and installation. Homeowners ready to leave oil heat behind can ask about heat pump systems or ductless mini-splits.
